Msgr. Armando Jorge Levoratti

Msgr. Armando Levoratti, who was Visiting Lecturer at the Instituto Superior del Traductorado-DIEGEP 5649 in 2005 and 2015, died on Thursday 13 October at the age of 83.

Born in La Plata on 31 January 1933, Levoratti was ordained Catholic priest in Rome on 3 March 1957. He studied theology at the Seminario Mayor (La Plata) and the Pontifical Gregorian University (Rome). He also learnt biblical languages in Italy and the United States.

On 5 March 1987, Cardinal Quarracino appointed him Vice-Rector of the seminary.

Between April 1983 and April 1985, he was a parish priest at Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Rosario (El Dique, Ensenada) and was later assigned to Nuestra Señora de la Piedad (the Seminario Mayor chapel).

On 11 July 1986, Pope John Paul II made him Honorary Prelate of His Holiness granting him the title of Monsignor.

He had been Professor of Old Testament at the Seminario Mayor (La Plata) since 1 January, 1960, and Visiting Lecturer at Universidad Católica Argentina (Ciudad de Buenos Aires) since 1974.

He held numerous courses and conferences on biblical exegesis and translation of sacred texts in Spain, Italy, the USA and almost every Latin American country. He was a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission and the editor of Revista Bíblica, the leading Latin American scholarly journal for Biblical Studies.

Together with the late Msgr Alfredo Trusso, he translated the Bible from Hebrew and Greek and published it as El Libro del Pueblo de Dios, a version for the Argentinian people. He was also the editor-in-chief of Santa Biblia, an ecumenical study Bible published in 1995 by the United Bible Society and used throughout Latin America by both Protestants and Catholics.

Levoratti served, to his death, as one of the chief consultants of the United Bible Society.

In 2005, invited by the Argentine Association of Technical-Scientific Translators (AATT), Levoratti held a lecture at the Instituto Superior del Traductorado-DIEGEP 5649 on Dynamic and Formal Equivalence in Translation. On the occasion, Lic. Torres, Rector of the college, decorated Levoratti with the medal of Special Guest. Levoratti, in turn, gave the Rector a presentation copy of his translation of the Bible.

In 2015, as part of the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the Traductorado, Levoratti returned to the college to lecture on Translation and Transculturalization. He was already evincing the symptoms of a long and painful illness that would ultimately take his life the following year.

On 19 June 2015, Msgr Levoratti officially blessed the premises of the Instituto Superior del Traductorado insufflating the Holy Spirit to the college and to the succeeding generations of professional translators.

We remember him as a man of God and an all-around translator who embodied the principles of sacrifice, honesty and decorum.
